Liberty Tax Service, a retail income tax company serving the United States and Canada, announced the rollout of a pioneer certification program for tax offices serving Hispanics.

  • Marilu Del Toro has been promoted to the position of group account manager for República, a Miami-based national branding, advertising, entertainment and communications company. Del Toro will oversee strategy and daily client service for several of the firm’s national accounts.


  • Pete Perez has been named Executive Vice President of Human Resources for ConAgra Foods. Perez joined ConAgra Foods as senior vice president of Human Resources in 2003. In his new role, Perez will lead the people-focused initiatives supporting the company's ongoing business transformation.

Felix kills 38 in Nicaragua as survivors wash ashore
Soldiers searched for more bodies after Hurricane Felix killed 38 people in Nicaragua. Although 52 members of a group of Miskito Indians washed ashore alive in neighboring Honduras, dozens were still missing in the days after the storm.


Chavez to Mediate Hostage Crisis in Colombia
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has agreed to meet with Colombian leftist guerrillas to discuss freeing rebel prisoners in return for the release of hostages.


Expansion begins on Panama Canal
Panama blasted away part of a hillside next to the canal on September 3, marking the start of the waterway's biggest expansion since it opened 93 years ago.
